#NetworkHerWay: Bringing women in STEM together

After the National day holiday period, Girls in Tech Singapore kicked off with a networking event to welcome our community back and to unite and inspire women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths). Keen to join the next one on 19th September which discusses the recruitment cycle in STEM? Register here.

Our #NetworkHerWay event was already almost two weeks ago. This event kicked off of a series of three networking events organised for anyone interested in STEM. Networking provides a great opportunity for women, and men, to identify role models, find mentors and sponsors and expand career opportunities. Enough time to reflect and as such we would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you who made this possible.

The evening kicked off with some networking, with an immediate buzz of engagement, from (mostly) women finding like-minded attendees to talk to and share experiences with. This was followed by a panel discussion with three of our amazing women in STEM with backgrounds ranging from Telco, Energy, Solution Architect, Research to MedTech. Netra, Jayantika and Trishna shared their personal personal experiences working in these areas, the pro’s and con’s and advice for women (aspiring) to work in these industries. Their stories will certainly be inspiring and motivating other women to consider or further pursue a career in STEM.

Some takeaways from the panel:

  1. Be open to new opportunities, you never know where it may lead you. You can’t plan your career A to Z.
  2. Consider cultural fit within an organisation, team and/or leadership. It may be more important than you realize.
  3. Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t do something. With passion, curiosity and hard work you can do (almost) anything!

After the panel discussion, attendees who had pre-registered, had the opportunity for a career coach speed dating session: A great opportunity for participants to raise burning career questions, struggles and opportunities with veterans from the industry and mentors. This was a new element to our networking event, which we will certainly be making available at future events due to amazing feedback. Special thank you also to our Girls in Tech mentors, Ramiya, Rohit and Winnie, for taking the time to listen to, ask questions and provide a steer int he right direction to some of the women from our community. Also, keep a look out for our Girls in Tech six month Mentorship Programme which will be launching early 2020 to sign up!

The location at JustCo was the perfect setting for the evening, with a cosy area for our panel discussion, breakout areas for our career coaching sessions and a high bar for some mingling. Thank you to JustCo for all your support. Also thanking Next Wave Partners for the catering: A delicious selection of finger foods and enough to provide some of us with lunch the next day. Much appreciated!

We can’t wait to see you at the next #NetworkHerWay event coming up 19th September.
